Governance

How RRID is governed

RRIDs are owned by a nonprofit so they stay free, open and independent of any company or grant. This page says who decides what, how to take part and what happens if anything changes.

Who does what

Four kinds of organisation work together. Only RRIDs.org sets policy.

RRIDs.org

Owns the identifiers. Decides on resource types, prefixes and authorities.

Operator: SciCrunch

Runs the RRID Portal and resolver under a published agreement [to be written].

Research: UC San Diego

FAIR Data Informatics Lab develops the system under research grants.

Authorities

Antibody Registry, Cellosaurus, MGI, Addgene and others keep the records of their type.

Board of directors

Responsible for the nonprofit's finances, strategy and policy, and for the agreement with the operator. [Three-year terms, staggered, at most two in a row. A majority of directors are independent of the operator.]

How decisions are made

  • The board decides by majority, with a quorum of [half plus one].
  • New resource types, new prefixes, new authorities and deprecations go to public comment for [30 days] first.
  • Board decisions and advisory board summaries are published [quarterly].

Conflicts of interest

Some board and advisory board members also work for SciCrunch, which operates the portal and sells services built on RRID data. [Everyone files an annual declaration of interests, and members step out of decisions on the operator agreement or commercial use of RRID data. People with a financial interest in RRID services hold at most a quarter of board seats.]

[Conflict-of-interest policy and declarations to be published]

Funding

RRID development has been funded mainly by the US National Institutes of Health through grants to UC San Diego and SciCrunch. The nonprofit itself receives [amount] a year. We publish an annual summary and our IRS filings.

Continuity

RRIDs must keep working whatever happens to any one organisation.

  • RRIDs resolve through n2t.net (California Digital Library) and identifiers.org as well as rrid.site.
  • [A full open copy of the RRID index is deposited every year in a trusted archive.]
  • [If the operator or funding stops, the board transfers the identifiers and data to a nonprofit successor that follows the Principles of Open Scholarly Infrastructure.]
